St John of San Fransisco is an Orthodox metochion of St Demetrios Monastery, in the Russian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate.
A metochion (подворье, podvorie in Russian) is a church which is a dependency of a particular monastic community. With the current spiritual challenges within the United States the metochion can be an effectual pastoral model. The metochion is a setting in which laypersons may be edified through a living experience of the ascetic Christian life. This has long been the traditional pastoral setting from early Christianity, and since Christian tradition in America has not developed in this manner, the metochion is a means by which this tradition can be preserved. The metochion is particularly suited for the pastoral care of laity, since unlike a monastery, the metochion clergy perform sacraments such as marriage and baptism. Likewise, active participation of the laity is a feature of the metochion.
